Big names on casualty list poi

The deafening hiss we've been hearing for the past five weeks was the air going out of the stock market at the end of the second quarter.

For those who still have the nerve to buy equities, I present my quarterly Casualty List -- a roster of stocks that have been banged up severely and that I think can recover and go on to new heights.

Microsoft, which I never thought I would see on this list, exemplifies the latest batch of casualties. Many of them are well- known companies with solid balance sheets and long histories of profitability.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index, a decent gauge of the overall stock market, lost 11.4 percent for the last three months, even after taking dividends into account.

To me, things seem less grim than many investors think. The European debt crisis of 2010 -- and probably 2011 -- may pass without lasting damage, as did the Asian currency crisis of 1997- 1998. That, too, provoked fears of a worldwide financial meltdown. The Gulf of Mexico oil spill is a tragedy for wildlife, shrimpers, fishermen and tourism. Yet its economic impact will be diluted with time.

Investors seem to forget that in the past 70 years we have gone through World War II, a cold war with the Soviet Union, radioactive fallout from nuclear testing, the Vietnam War, the 2001 terrorist attack, the AIDS crisis and numerous recessions.

And yet for the 70 years from 1940 through 2009, the stock market has provided a compound annual return of 10.8 percent. We have always had problems, and always jewelry-q will -- yet enterprise, innovation and economic progress somehow continue.

Investors are fixated on whether we are about to have a double- dip recession. Double-dips are rare creatures, and not the most likely outcome in my view. If you see stocks such as Microsoft and EBay on the bargain counter, the wise thing in my opinion is to buy.

Microsoft fell 21 percent last quarter. You can now pick up the shares for 12 times earnings. Over the past 10 years, Microsoft has sold for an average of about 23 times earnings.

I think there is room for positive surprises, as Microsoft benefits from demand for its latest operating system upgrade, Windows 7.

EBay, the online auction firm, is trading for less than $20, down from about $27 three months ago. In recent years, it has lost market share to Amazon.com in online retailing, but still is growing strongly.

The company has become the leading retailer in mobile commerce, in which people order merchandise using Blackberry, iPhone, Droid or similar smartphones, Colin Gillis, a New York-based analyst at BGC Partners said.

The company is debt-free and the stock sells for 13 times earnings.

General Dynamics, down 23 percent in total return for the quarter, has been slammed as more people become convinced that defense spending will have to be sliced as Congress tries to address the large federal deficit. The military contractor makes planes, ships, weapons and information systems.

pandora style beads

I agree that General Dynamics faces a difficult environment, but that is why its stock sells for less than 10 times earnings. The company increased its earnings in eight of the past 10 years; last year they were unchanged at $6.17 a share, a record.

Investors also punished American Eagle Out

By Jenni Silver

Chief City Reporter

SHOPPERS have welcomed the news that big name stores will be coming to Gloucester.

High profile brands like Dior and Prada will be on sale when the Gloucester Quays Outlet Centre opens on May 21.

Visitors to The Citizen's website at have been sharing their views on the list, which also includes dvb, David and Victoria Beckham's exclusive denim label.

"I think it looks fab. How can attracting more people to Gloucester be a bad thing? The city is probably one of the worst in the whole country for shopping, so I think it's great they are doing something about it, and also making a feature of the Docks which most cities already do. I mean - would you really like to see the Docks site left with derelict warehouses forever?"

Stop Whinging from Gloucester

"It looks very impressive. I'm not sure Clip on charms those places will be a success in Gloucester though. I hope the parking is enough too."

John, Gloucester

"Let's be positive about this and look at the bigger view of this. This is a premium designer outlet and leisure area with big names signed up not currently present in the county which will attract in the region of three million plus extra visitors to Gloucester, just not from the all over the county but further a field based on its drawn catchment area. These extra visitors would of not necessary have come to Gloucester in the first place and would of carried on shopping elsewhere. It only takes 10% of these visitors to wander five minutes into Southgate St and the rest of the city will benefit with this extra footfall. I know for sure we will shop both in the four gate streets and the outlet. Let's also not forget we have the Kings Quarter development to come in the next few years, once this is complete, everything between these two prime retail/leisure sites will thrive."

Ethan, Gloucester

"As someone who has actually taken the time to watch the video, I have to say it looks impressive and I have to congratulate those involved - I hope it works and does regenerate Gloucester in the way most people want, including bringing some fresh people into the city centre too - as the quays shouldn't be competition for the centre, merely compliment it."

Optimistic about life, Quedgeley

"Great news, it's been a long time coming for Gloucester! With the awesome line up of tenants I've seen coming to this development on top of those mentioned, we as a family can honestly say we won't need to shop and spend leisure time anywhere else, Cribbs/Cabots/ Swindon outlet and neighbouring Cheltenham for instance. Gloucester will now get us spending our hard earned money back in the counties capital for sure. Well done Peel and British Waterways by Replica Bvlgari sticking with this rollercoaster of a project through the years. Roll on May 21."

Anthony, Gloucester

Julian Dunkerton pats his casual jacket, black sweater and blue jeans. "Everything I'm wearing is a SuperGroup product, except we don't sell socks," he says. He's working on that.

The clothing retailer best known for the Superdry brand - sported by celebrities such as David Beckham - is set to float on the London Stock Exchange next month in a move that will crystallise a Pounds 200m fortune for the 44 year-old.

It's been a 25-year journey from a Cheltenham market stall to Dunkerton finally reaping the rewards, selling the lion's share of the Pounds 105m of directors' stock in the Pounds 125m public offering. That will reduce his 53pc stake to 30pc, while the holdings of brand and design director James Holder and wholesale and international chief executive Theo Karpathios will drop from 19.75pc to 15pc.

However, it's the future that really interests him, with plans to grow from 40 to 150 Superdry and Cult Clothing shops in Britain, in addition to SuperGroup's 54 concessions clip in hair extensions in House of Fraser. Overseas, the group is expanding from 16 to 27 franchised outlets over the next three months - with new sites in Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, France, Indonesia and Venezuela. Dunkerton is also negotiating deals in the Middle East and China, and says SuperGroup's franchise partner in the US is in discussions to rebrand a 28-store chain as Superdry.

"I think there's room for 1,000 franchises in Europe," he says. "We're nowhere near the peak. We're at the top table of profitability of any clothing store in the UK as a percentage of turnover. We could literally be the fastestgrowing company on the whole stock market. It's going to be like the floodgates have opened."

There's a lot of selling to be done first and Dunkerton has spent two weeks meeting potential investors in London and Scotland.

Retailer New Look, travel group Travelport and Madame Tussauds owner Merlin Entertainments have all postponed flotations because they were unable to secure values their private equity backers wanted. Discount retailer Matalan has also pulled the plug on its sale process and last week there were reports that some investors considered SuperGroup's rating too aggressive.

Dunkerton disagrees. "Out of 80 people we've seen, only two have even vaguely intimated that," he says. "Most people are seeing what we see, which is the growth."

The figures are impressive.Sales rose 87pc to Pounds 76.1m in SuperGroup's latest financial year, with profits 61pc higher at Pounds 7.6m, while same-store sales were up 29pc over Christmas.

Analysts are forecasting underlying pre-tax profits of Pounds 25m this year and Dunkerton dismisses concerns that the float's timing is wrong.

"The other floats have been cancelled because they're led by venture capitalists and they're smothered in debt," he says. "Ultimately, people don't want to be sold something that has low growth potential.

"Are we the fastest-growing company in our sector? Are we very profitable? Are we cash-creating? Yes. That puts us in a unique place, so it can't be the wrong time. When you're offering the City the chance to grow with you, that seems like a good time."

He also does not accept comparisons with New Look. "New Look is not in the same market," he says. "They're in the fashion industry; we're in the clothing product industry.

"If they get a season wrong, they're knackered. Ours is a gentle development of the same produc

JADE TRIES TO HEAL FAMILY RIFT

JADE Goody was forced to act as peacemaker only hours after lifesaving surgery when her mum and her boyfriend got into a bust- up.

The reality TV star, 27, played gobetween from her hospital bed despite suffering from soaring temperatures and the after-effects of a five-hour operation to remove a golf ball-sized tumour from her bowel.

The bitter argument started when Jackiey Budden, 50, discovered no one was at her daughter's bedside on Friday when she came round.

She blamed Jade's partner Jack Tweed, 21 - screaming at him in earshot of shocked hospital staff.

A source close to Jade said: "The last thing she wants is to have two of the people she cares most about in the world at each other's throats.

"Even though she has been through a really tough operation and is very weak she has been trying to persuade them both to make the peace for her sake.

"She was up late into Saturday night trying to get the pair of them to bury the hatchet."

Jack, who was jailed for battering a teenager with a golf club, was only released last month and has to keep a night-time curfew as part of his bail conditions. He had been at the Royal Marsden Hospital for much of Friday, but had to leave to honour the bail terms.

However, Jackiey was furious at his departure and felt he had not done a good job of keeping her informed of Jade's condition. Jade is thought to have spent much of Saturday evening on the phone to them. Last night, the extent of Jade's suffering as she fought to heal the rift was revealed as it emerged she suffered sky-high temperatures following the op. A source said: "She had a very bad night and had no sleep. She was in quite a bit of pain and it didn't help that her mum replica Glashutte Watches and Jack were screaming in front of her and at each other's throats."

Jade's spokesman Max Clifford confirmed: "She didn't have a good night but is feeling a lot brighter today. Her mum and Jack have been there."

Yesterday, rumours spread that Jack had dumped Jade after his Facebook entry was changed to read "Single". But one of his pals insisted: "The status got changed by mistake. Once he realised he changed it back."

The Daily Mirror exclusively revealed on Saturday how doctors found the bowel tumour after Jade had to have emergency surgery.

The mum-of-two recently lost her hair due to chemotherapy for her cervical cancer, discovered last August.

She was devastated to learn last week that the disease had spread to her bowel, liver and groin. But she has vowed to keep working to provide for sons Bobby, five, and Freddie, four.

Jade told a friend yesterday: "I'm going to keep on fighting. I will never stop - I can't because of my boys."

Doctors are hoping to begin a new treatment this week using drug Topotecan, which can shrink tumours.

Jade said: Fendi Handbags "I know time is running out so I have to reach out for anything that can help. Jade Goody doesn't give up easily."

The last thing she wants is to have two of the people she cares most about in the world at each other's throats FRIEND OF JADE

Florida home sales jump as nat

June was still sunny in the Sunshine State for existing home sales, with an increase in Cleveland Browns jerseys purchases bucking a national dip in buying blamed on the end of the tax credit.

Statewide, single-family home sales last month were up 8 percent compared with May and 15 percent over the same time last year, according to monthly data released Thursday by the group Florida Realtors.

Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast saw a similar trend with purchases jumping 23 percent and 16 percent, respectively, in June over May.

"Everybody saw a slowdown for a second after the tax credit," said Realtor Shannon Brink, of Re/Max Prestige Realty in West Palm Beach. "But a great home priced correctly is selling."

The National Association of Realtors had expected sales to drop following the April 30 expiration of a home buyer tax credit, and while June buys reflected a 5.6 percent dip from May, they were still 8.5 percent above where they were in June 2009.

To cash in on the tax credit worth up to $8,000 for first-time buyers and up to $6,500 for some repeat buyers, a contract had to be signed on a home by April 30, with closing taking place before the recently extended deadline of Sept. 30.

Both the Florida Realtors and national association measure closed sales.

"Broadly speaking, sales closed after the home buyer tax credit will be significantly lower compared to the credit-induced spring surge," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors. "Only when jobs are air force created at a sufficient pace will home sales return to sustainable healthy levels."

One theory on why Florida's sales were still climbing in June is that the state's abundance of short sales, which take longer to complete, were still working through the spring tax credit buying timeline. Even if buyers signed a contract on a short sale by April 30, they could still be trying to close the deal.

Cut-rate pricing and historically low interest rates may also have nudged fence-sitting borrowers forward, said Bill Hardin, director of real estate programs at Florida International University in Miami.

"I think we're getting to some price points that are very attractive," Hardin said.

The median sales price in June for a single-family home in Florida dropped 3 percent from 2009 to $143,400 in June, while Palm Beach County's saw a 7 percent decrease to $232,700.

The median Treasure Coast price increased 3 percent to $112,900.

Prices generally remained stable compared with May.

The national average commitment rate for a 30-year, conventional, fixed-rate mortgage fell to 4.74 percent in June.

But Brad Hunter, the chief economist with MetroStudy in Palm Beach Gardens, said interpreting home sale statistics this year is difficult because the tax credit interfered with the normal market.

"I wouldn't draw Christian Louboutin Store a conclusion from one month," he said. "The longer term trend is still more distressed properties being introduced, and that would naturally tend to boost sales."

In June, banks seized 12,936 Florida homes, a 76 percent increase from June 2009, according to the Irvine, Calif.-base
