Health water tor ture

Byline: Ceri Gould

G et up. Sip glass of warm water with slice of lemon a la Liz Hurley and Carol Vo r d e r m a nPee. Drink large glass of cold water before leaving house. Arrive at office busting. Pee. Plonk 500ml of mineral water on desk. Notice the girls in marketing have 1.5l bottles on their desk. Write note to buy two-litre bottle at lunchtime. Pledge to drink two litres of water by noon by sipping constantly as per advice from . com Forget and at five minutes to 12 swig one litre of water which involves two trips to the water cooler. Pee. A lot. If that sounds familiar then you're one of the thousands of women in Wales who are suffering from water torture. Now don't bother going to see your doctor about it, because chances are, he'll be writing a prescription for fluid retention pills before you can say make mine a Brecon Carreg. No, your GP won't have heard about it. Unless he's a she. And then she might. If there's a bottle of water on the desk then it's highly likely she's a sufferer too. Because water torture is everywhere - it's endemic in offices. If high power led bulbs you have a 500ml bottle of water on your desk, the chances are your neighbour has a litre bottle, and her neighbour a 1.5l bottle. You can imagine the excitement when it was discovered that Brecon Carreg had introduced a five-litre bottle. That's hydration and weight-training all in one. You can tone your bingo wings while fulfilling all your water needs. But is this enthusiasm for water-drinking becoming a bit too much? Are the Welshbladders about to revolt? Marketing executive Louise Thomas, from Cardiff, said, ``Quite frankly, it's getting a bit mad. It's just peer pressure to drink more and more water. Okay, so it's healthy, but the girls in the office get really competitive about it. It's just like that Smack The Pony comedy sketch where each woman is drinking more and more water.

``I know it sounds ridiculous but it's almost bullying.''

And Jill Davies, 39, from Swansea, agrees. ``Every time I have a cup of tea, one Other brands jewellery woman in the office tuts. Yes, she actually tuts. She tells me off saying that tea dehydrates you. But if I want a cup of tea, I want a cup of tea, do you know what I mean?''

You can't argue against the health benefits of drinking more water. Handbag.com puts it as their number two health tip. Only quitting smoking is supposed to give you more benefits.

But how much is enough? Handbag.com recommend two litres, or eight tall glasses, a day taken at intervals.

Fitness expert Kathy Smith agrees with the eight glasses but more if you exercise and yourhealth.co.uk say to gulp down up to 12 glasses. Water is, of course, the body's most essential resource. Water forms an essential role in almost all body activities including digestion, absorption, weight loss, joint lubrication, temperature regulation etc.

Dr Batmanghelidj, author of Your Body's Many Cries for Water, says at least 12 full glasses per day is what you need. Dr Batmanghelidj is convinced that many illnesses are caused by people not drinking enough water. ``You are not sick, you are thirsty,'' he says.

In fact thirst is something to be avoided at all costs. Whereas people who are trying to lose weight are advised to ``listen to their body'' and ``only eat when you're hungry''. The experts are advising the opposite where water is concerned. Just drink constantly, they say. Or, as Dr B puts it, ``if you are drinking water merely as a response to thirst, you are past the point of being dehydrated.'' A good gauge
