NEVER before in the history of political conferences has so much been written about wholesale colthing shoes. Admittedly, seven years ago Theresa May did cause a spasm of Tory excitement when she wore a pair of leopard print heels in Brighton, but, since then, it's been all quiet on the foot front.
Then, Sarah Brown stepped out in a pair of [pounds sterling]350 fawn leather pumps and all hell broke lose.
Mrs Brown was accused of being an extravagant showoff, a profligate and insensitive fool. She wore a nice dress! How dare she, when the country is in such a state? Naturally, she was compared unfavourably with crafty Samantha Cameron, whose more modest choice of [pounds sterling]29 Zara heels cast her in a righteous light.
But why shouldn't the Prime Minister's wife wear Jimmy Choos? They are a British brand of excellence, famed for their exquisite design and craftsmanship from here to Hollywood. It's not gaudy of Mrs Brown to wear them -- it's good and generous business sense. What would her critics rather have her do? Stomp up to the stage in a pair of old wellies? rolex replica To be honest, the election campaign has not begun, but the cruel sport of contrasting and comparing the sartorial and otherwise efforts of the two women is already exhausting. I suppose I should join in, yet I find myself curiously unable to say a bad word about either Samantha or Sarah. In different ways, they both seem like truly splendid women; devoted to their husbands and their families, their businesses, their charities.
Whatever it is you've got on your feet, these particular political wives don't deserve a kicking. Not yet, anyway.
